Paediatrician and lab in one building: how it works

  1. Book the doctor by call or WhatsApp, with your child's age and main problem.

  2. See the paediatrician. The doctor examines your child and decides whether a test will help. Many common illnesses need none.

  3. Walk to the MCR lab with the doctor's slip. Ask whether the test needs fasting and when the report will be ready.

  4. Show the report to the doctor who advised it. When you book, ask how to do this and whether there is a fee for it.

Who you can see

A paediatrician (pediatrician in US spelling) is a child specialist doctor. These two see children in the clinic, so advised blood or urine tests can usually be done on the same visit:

  • Doctor – About – When – Fee

  • Dr. Debangshi Ghosh – MBBS, MD – In clinic, Thursday and Saturday, 11 AM / 6 PM (please confirm the session time when booking) – Rs 500

  • Dr. Pallabi Hui – Paediatrician – In clinic, by appointment – Ask when booking

Six more paediatricians, two of them online, are on the Paediatrics Department page.

When a test may be advised

  • Fever lasting more than 2–3 days, or earlier in dengue season if the doctor advises (some dengue tests need to be done in the first days of fever)

  • Pain or burning while passing urine

  • A fever with no clear cause in a baby or toddler (a urine infection may show no other sign)

  • Looking pale or tired, or eating poorly for weeks

  • Slow weight gain or growth worries

Please do not give leftover antibiotics before the visit; they can alter some test results.

Making your child's blood test in Behala easier

  • Be honest. "A quick pinch, then it's over" works better than "it won't hurt".

  • Keep them drinking plain water. Water is usually allowed even before a fasting test; check with the lab if unsure. Do not keep a baby or toddler without feeds for long unless the doctor specifically says so.

  • Dress for it: loose sleeves that roll up easily.

  • Bring a distraction: a favourite toy, a book or a video.

  • Hold them close. A seated hug on your lap helps. Babies can be breastfed if the lab staff agree.

  • Fasting test? Ask for the earliest suitable time and carry a snack.

  • Afterwards, press on the cotton for a minute and praise your child, tears or not.

Urine sample: wash the area with plain water (no soap or antiseptic) and pat dry. Let the first few drops go into the toilet, then catch the middle part of the stream in the lab's sterile container without touching the inside of the container or lid. Close it and hand it to the lab straight away. For girls, gently separate the skin folds; for boys, do not force back the foreskin.

For babies and toddlers still in diapers, ask the doctor how the sample should be collected, as this depends on the test. A bag sample is not reliable for a urine culture. Never squeeze urine from a used diaper.

Do not wait for a test or report. Go to a hospital emergency if your child:

  • breathes fast or with effort, grunts, the chest pulls in with each breath, or the lips look blue

  • has a fit, or is very drowsy, floppy or hard to wake

  • cannot drink or breastfeed, keeps vomiting, or vomits everything

  • is passing very little urine

  • is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or more, or below 35.5°C, or feels unusually cold

  • has a rash of tiny red or purple spots, or bruises, that do not fade when you press a glass on them

  • has a stiff neck, a severe headache, or cries when moved

  • has bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or urine, black stools, or new red spots on the skin

  • has severe or constant stomach pain, becomes restless, irritable or unusually sleepy, or has cold, clammy hands and feet, especially as the fever is coming down (a child with dengue can get worse just when the fever settles)

At night or on a Sunday, do not wait for the clinic to open. Call 112 for an ambulance if you cannot get there safely.

Quick answers

Do we go elsewhere for the tests? Usually not. Blood and urine tests your child's doctor advises can be done at MCR's own pathology lab in the same building. If a different kind of test is needed, the doctor will tell you where to go.

How do we show the report to the doctor? Ask the lab when the report will be ready, then take it back to the doctor who advised the test. When you book, ask how this works and whether there is a fee for it. Many coughs, colds and short fevers need no test at all.

Must my child stay hungry before a blood test? Only if the doctor or lab says so. Most routine tests do not need fasting. Plain water is usually fine even when fasting.
