PFT (lung function test) at MCR

A PFT shows how well your lungs work. You take a deep breath and blow hard into a tube. It helps the doctor diagnose and monitor asthma and COPD. Your doctor may ask you to stop some inhalers for a few hours before the test.

Go to a hospital emergency if:

  • You are so breathless that you cannot speak in full sentences

  • Your lips or fingertips look blue or grey

  • You have chest pain, or you cough up more than a little blood

  • Your reliever inhaler is not helping

Frequently asked questions

How long should a cough last before I see a doctor?

See a doctor if a cough lasts more than three weeks, or sooner if you have fever, breathlessness, chest pain, weight loss or blood in your phlegm.

Are inhalers better than tablets for asthma?

For most people, yes. Inhalers deliver a small dose of medicine straight to the lungs, with fewer side effects. The doctor will check that you use your inhaler correctly.

Is TB treatment free?

Yes. Under the government's National TB Elimination Programme, TB tests and treatment are free at government centres. Our chest specialists can assess you and advise.

Smoke from crackers can worsen asthma. Read our Kali Puja and Diwali safety guide.
