See a doctor soon if:

Hearing in one ear drops suddenly: see an ENT doctor within a day, because early treatment matters
An ear discharge comes with fever, or there is swelling or pain behind the ear

You have a lump in the neck that does not go away, or trouble swallowing

Go to a hospital emergency if a nosebleed does not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure on the soft part of the nose, or if a child has swallowed or pushed an object into the ear or nose and is in pain or has trouble breathing.

Looking after your ears

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins, keys or oil into the ear. They push wax deeper and can damage the eardrum.
Keep water out of an ear that is discharging.
Protect your ears from very loud sound, such as loudspeakers and crackers close to the ear.

Should I clean ear wax at home?

Usually not. Ear wax protects the ear and comes out on its own. If your ear feels blocked, see a doctor rather than digging it out.

Long-lasting blockage can be due to allergy, sinusitis, a bent nasal wall or swellings inside the nose (polyps). An ENT doctor can examine the nose and advise treatment.
