Who should get their kidneys checked
Kidney disease often has no symptoms in the early stages. A simple blood test (creatinine with eGFR) and a urine test for protein can find it early. Get checked if you:
Have diabetes or high blood pressure
Have a family member with kidney disease
Are over 60, or have heart disease
Take painkillers often
Blood and urine tests can be done at our lab, and home blood collection is available.
See a doctor soon if:
You are passing much less urine than usual
Swelling comes with breathlessness
You see blood in the urine
A report shows a high creatinine or potassium
Looking after your kidneys
Keep your sugar and blood pressure under control.
Do not take painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac often without a doctor's advice.
Avoid unknown herbal or "kidney cleanse" medicines.
Cut down on salt, and drink as much water as your doctor advises.
Frequently asked questions
My creatinine is a little high. What should I do?
Repeat the test as your doctor advises and see a nephrologist. Bring your earlier reports, so the doctor can see the trend.
Can painkillers harm the kidneys?
Yes. Taking painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac often, especially with dehydration or existing kidney disease, can harm the kidneys. Ask your doctor which painkiller is safe for you.
