Eye problems an eye specialist can help with

চোখ লাল, জল পড়া বা ঝাপসা দেখছেন? MCR-এর মাধ্যমে চক্ষু বিশেষজ্ঞের পরামর্শ নিন।

Common reasons to consult an eye specialist (ophthalmologist):

  • Red, itchy or watery eyes, from an infection (conjunctivitis) or an allergy

  • Eye strain, tired eyes or headaches after screen work

  • Blurred or reduced vision, or a feeling that your glasses no longer suit you

  • Dry, gritty or burning eyes

  • A stye or swelling of the eyelid

  • Cloudy vision or glare from lights, which can be a sign of cataract

  • A yearly eye check if you have diabetes or high blood pressure

Go to an eye hospital emergency at once if:

  • You suddenly lose vision or your vision suddenly blurs, in one or both eyes

  • You have an eye injury or a chemical has splashed into the eye (rinse it with clean running water for 15 minutes on the way)

  • You have severe eye pain with redness, headache or vomiting

  • You see new flashes of light, a shower of floaters, or a dark curtain over part of your vision

If vision loss comes with weakness of the face, arm or leg, or slurred speech, call 112: it can be a stroke.

How an online eye consultation works

Our eye specialist consults online. The doctor asks about your symptoms, looks at your eye on video, and advises on treatment. If you need a full eye examination, such as an eye pressure check or a retina check, the doctor will tell you. Before the call, sit in good light, keep your glasses and any eye drops you use nearby, and have a clear photo of the eye ready if you can.

Frequently asked questions

Can diabetes affect the eyes?

Yes. Diabetes can damage the back of the eye (the retina), often without early symptoms. Have your eyes checked every year, and keep your sugar and blood pressure under control. Read our diabetes check-up guide.

How often should adults have an eye check?

Every one to two years after the age of 40, and sooner if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of glaucoma.

Can I use eye drops from the chemist for red eyes?

Avoid steroid eye drops unless a doctor prescribes them. They can make some infections worse and raise the pressure in the eye.
