We measure, plot, ask, examine and explain.

What happens at a growth and health check-up
Measuring. Weight and height (length, measured lying down, for children under 2), head size in young children, and BMI in older children.
Plotting on growth charts. WHO charts for children under 5 and Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) charts for ages 5 to 18. Babies born early are plotted by their corrected age, usually until age 2. The doctor checks that your child keeps to a steady line over time.
Milestones. Questions and simple play to see movement, speech, understanding and social skills for your child's age.
Nutrition. What your child eats and drinks on a usual day, milk, snacks, picky eating, sleep and screen time.
Examination and next steps. A physical check, plain advice, when to come back, and whether any test is needed.

What we help with
A routine child health check-up near you, from babies to teenagers
Growth check: weight, height and BMI tracked on growth charts
Slow weight gain, worries about height, or weight rising too fast
Development milestones, such as late walking or talking
If your child loses a skill they already had, such as stopping babbling, talking, walking, or making eye contact, book within a few days rather than waiting for a routine check-up.
Picky eating and advice on home food
School-entry check: growth, a general examination, questions about vision and hearing (the doctor may advise a formal eye test, which is recommended for every child before starting school), and a look at the vaccination card for doses due under the IAP and national schedules
Anaemia screening when the doctor advises it, for example if your child looks pale, tires easily or eats poorly. The blood test can be done at MCR's own pathology lab in the same building. If paleness comes with bruising, bleeding, fever that will not settle, bone pain or swollen glands, see a doctor the same day.
Bring these along
Vaccination card or Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card
Earlier height and weight records, or the school health card
Previous prescriptions and test reports
A note of what your child ate yesterday

Go to a hospital emergency instead, without waiting for a check-up, if your child:
has trouble breathing, has a fit, or is very drowsy, floppy or hard to wake
is a baby who is not feeding or breastfeeding, or vomits everything
is a baby under 3 months with any fever, or feels unusually cold
has blue or grey lips, or the chest pulls in with each breath
is very pale and breathless, faints, or has a racing heartbeat
is pale and also has unexplained bruises, tiny red or purple spots on the skin, or bleeding (nose, gums) that will not stop
is very thirsty, passing a lot of urine or losing weight and is vomiting, has tummy pain, is breathing fast and deep, or is unusually sleepy
cannot keep fluids down or is passing very little urine
Same day, not a routine booking: if your child is drinking much more than usual, passing urine much more often (or wetting the bed again after being dry), is tired, or is losing weight, see a doctor and get a blood sugar test the same day. These can be early signs of diabetes in children.
Quick answers
My child is not ill. Is a check-up still useful? Yes. A visit when your child is well gives the doctor a starting point, so slow changes in growth or development can be noticed early.
Is a growth check different from a regular consultation? It is a regular consultation with a paediatrician at the doctor's usual fee, with the time spent on measuring, plotting and talking about growth, food and development rather than an illness. A blood test is done only if the doctor advises one, for example for anaemia, at MCR's pathology lab in the same building.
When should we book a school-entry check? A few months before your child starts school, so there is time for any eye test or catch-up vaccine the doctor advises. In the first two years, growth is usually checked at each vaccination visit; your paediatrician will suggest how often after that.
