Newborn and Baby Care with a Paediatrician Doctor at Behala

Is she drinking enough? Why is he still a little yellow on day five? Which injection is due at six weeks? At MCR Super Speciality Polyclinic & Pathology you can book a paediatrician doctor at Behala for exactly these newborn and baby questions, a short walk from Behala Tram Depot. (Using the US spelling, "pediatrician"? Same child specialist doctor, same visit.)

Book now: call or WhatsApp 9830525004, or tap Book Now on the Paediatrics Department page. Tell us your baby's age when you call.

Who you can see for your baby

  • Dr. Suhena Sengupta: 15 years of paediatric experience, caring for children from newborns to adolescents. Speaks Bengali, Hindi and English. Consultation fee Rs 900.

  • Dr. Debangana Chatterjee: 6 years of experience in child health and immunisation. Speaks Bengali, Hindi and English. Consultation fee Rs 800.

Each doctor keeps their own days, so ask who is available when you book.

What we help with

  • Weight and feeding checks. Weight, length and head size on a growth chart, plus latch, how often your baby feeds and wet nappies. From day 5, expect at least 6 heavy wet nappies in 24 hours; see a doctor the same day if there are fewer. WHO and IAP advise breast milk only for the first six months: no water, ghutti, janam ghutti, gripe water, honey or other drinks. Vitamin D drops, ORS or medicines your doctor prescribes are still fine. If your baby needs formula, the doctor will explain how to make it up safely. No honey before one year.

  • Jaundice questions. A yellow tinge is common in the first week. The doctor examines your baby and, if needed, advises a test to measure the bilirubin level. A high level may need light treatment (phototherapy) in hospital. Please do not rely on sunlight to treat it. See the doctor within a day or two if your baby is still yellow after 2 weeks (3 weeks if born early), or if the stools are pale, white or clay-coloured, or the urine is dark yellow and stains the nappy. These can point to a liver problem that must be treated in the first weeks of life.

  • Milestones. Smiling back, a steady head, rolling, sitting and babbling (corrected age is used for babies born early). Tell the doctor if your baby is not smiling back by 3 months, has no steady head by 4 months, is not sitting without support by 9 months, is not babbling by 9 months, or does not turn to sounds or follow your face. If your baby loses a skill they already had, book a visit within days. Do not wait for the next check-up.

  • Vaccination schedule advice. The doctor reads your baby's vaccination card and tells you what is due next under India's national and IAP schedules (doses at birth, 6, 10 and 14 weeks, then more around 6 to 9 months, with boosters in the second year and later childhood).

  • Everyday worries. Cord stump care (keep it clean and dry with nothing put on it: no oil, powder, ash or turmeric), rashes, spit-ups, a stuffy nose, sleep and crying spells.

  • Tests in the same building. Blood or urine tests the doctor advises can be done at MCR's own pathology lab.

Bring the discharge summary and the vaccination card.

Go to a hospital emergency instead, any day or night, if your baby:

  • is not feeding, or is too sleepy to wake for feeds

  • breathes very fast while calm (count for a full minute: 60 or more breaths a minute under 2 months old, 50 or more from 2 to 12 months), grunts, stops breathing for 20 seconds or more, or the chest pulls in with each breath

  • has blue or grey lips, has a fit, or is floppy and very hard to wake

  • is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or more, or feels cold despite being wrapped (temperature below 35.5°C, about 96°F)

  • has a rash that does not fade when you press a glass on it, or a bulging soft spot on the head

  • has a constant high-pitched cry or cannot be settled at all

  • turned yellow in the first 24 hours of life, or the yellow reaches the palms and soles

  • vomits green fluid, vomits every feed or vomits forcefully, or has blood in the vomit or stool

  • has no wet nappy for 8 hours or more, or has a dry mouth, sunken eyes or a sunken soft spot (for example with diarrhoea)

  • has redness spreading onto the belly around the cord, pus or a bad smell from the cord

  • is bleeding from the cord, nose or anywhere else

Do not wait for an appointment, and never give medicines or antibiotics without a doctor's advice.

Quick answers

Do I need to book before bringing my newborn? Yes, please book first, as each doctor keeps their own days. Tell us your baby's age and discharge date. The first check is usually due within 2 to 3 days of coming home, and sooner if your baby went home within 48 hours of birth, was born early, looks yellow or is not feeding well, so call soon after discharge. If your birth hospital gave you a date, keep it.

Can a jaundice blood test be done at MCR? Yes, if the doctor advises one, at our pathology lab in the same building. Yellow in the first day of life, or yellow reaching the palms and soles, needs a hospital emergency instead.

My baby was born early. Do the check-ups change? Often, yes. Babies born early or small, or who needed special care after birth, usually need closer follow-up, and growth and milestones are judged by corrected age (counted from the due date). Bring the discharge summary and ask the doctor to plan the visits. The clinic is closed on Sundays; for any danger sign above, go straight to a hospital emergency on any day.
