What to compare when choosing a paediatrician

  • Qualification and years of experience

  • Whether the doctor regularly sees children of your child's age

  • The doctor's own consulting days and times

  • Travel time from home at the hour you would go

  • A language your child is at ease in

  • Whether a follow-up can be done online

Our guide, How to choose a paediatrician or child specialist in Kolkata, goes through each point.

What our paediatricians help with

  • Fever, cough, cold, sore throat and ear pain

  • Vomiting, loose motions, rashes and allergies

  • Newborn check-ups, feeding and weight gain

  • Growth, development and teenage health concerns

  • Advice on which vaccines are due under the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and government immunisation schedules

  • Blood and urine tests the doctor advises, at MCR's own pathology lab in the same building

Before the visit: bring the vaccination card, earlier prescriptions and test reports.

Before a doctor has seen your child, please do not give leftover antibiotics, cough-and-cold syrups (never under 2 years), or medicines to stop loose motions or vomiting. Do not give ibuprofen, mefenamic acid or aspirin for fever unless a doctor advises it, as they can be risky in dengue. For loose motions you can start ORS while you wait.

Go to a hospital emergency instead, without waiting for an appointment, if your child:

  • breathes fast or with effort, the chest pulls in with each breath, grunts or makes a harsh noise when breathing in, has pauses in breathing, or the lips or tongue look blue or grey

  • has a fit (seizure), or is very drowsy, floppy or hard to wake

  • has fever with a stiff neck, a bulging soft spot on the head (in a baby), or a rash of small red-purple spots or bruises that does not fade when you press a glass against it

  • is a baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or more, or below 35.5°C (feels cold), or who is feeding poorly, moving less than usual, or turns yellow in the first day of life or yellow down to the palms and soles

  • is not able to drink or breastfeed, vomits everything, or shows signs of dehydration: sunken eyes, no tears when crying, a very dry mouth, or no urine (dry nappy) for 6 to 8 hours

  • vomits green fluid or blood, or has blood in the stool, especially with bouts of severe crying or drawing the legs up

  • has bleeding gums or nose, red spots on the skin, black stools, blood in the vomit, severe stomach pain, cold and clammy hands and feet, or becomes restless or very weak, during or after a fever (these can be dengue warning signs)

  • may have swallowed poison, kerosene, a button battery, a magnet or someone's medicine (take the container with you; do not make your child vomit)

  • has swelling of the lips, face or tongue, or wheezing or trouble breathing, after a food, medicine or insect sting

  • has choked on food or a small object and still coughs, wheezes or breathes noisily, or has had a head injury with vomiting or drowsiness, a burn, a near-drowning, or a snake or animal bite

Do not wait for the clinic to open (it is closed on Sundays and from 8 PM to 8 AM), and do not wait for a booked appointment.

Questions parents ask

Which doctor should I book? Tell us your child's age, the main problem, the days that suit you, and any language or online preference. Our team will tell you who is available.

Which of the eight doctors consult by video? Dr. Kaustav Banerjee and Dr. Sharlin Matin. Online consults suit follow-ups, discussing test reports and general advice. They are not for emergencies. A baby under 3 months with fever, any child with a warning sign listed on this page, and a child with breathing difficulty, ear pain, tummy pain or a new rash needs to be examined in person. See what works by video.

Do all eight doctors charge the same fee? No. Each profile above shows the fee, from Rs 500 to Rs 900; for Dr. Pallabi Hui, please ask when booking. If the doctor advises a blood or urine test, it can be done at MCR's own pathology lab in the same building.
