Cara is the skin clinic of MCR Super Speciality Polyclinic & Pathology, at 11A Sourin Roy Road, near Behala Tram Depot, Kolkata. Every visit starts with a consultation with a dermatologist: a doctor with an MBBS and a postgraduate qualification (MD, DNB or DDVL) in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy. The dermatologist examines your skin, explains the likely cause and discusses the treatment options with you, in Bengali, Hindi or English.

Cosmetic skin treatments

Cara also offers cosmetic skin treatments. Each one is done only after a consultation, in which the dermatologist checks whether the treatment suits you and explains what it involves, the possible side effects and the cost.

  • Skin boosters: small injections into the skin that aim to improve hydration and texture.

  • Botox: injections that relax certain facial muscles to soften lines, such as frown lines.

  • Dermal fillers: gel injections that add volume or soften deeper lines and folds.

  • Thread lift: fine threads placed under the skin to lift sagging areas. The threads dissolve over time.

  • Laser hair removal: laser light that reduces unwanted hair over several sessions. The dermatologist first checks that it suits your skin and hair type.

The effects of these treatments wear off with time, so they need to be repeated to keep the result, and results vary from person to person. Bruising, swelling or redness for a few days is common after injections. Tell the dermatologist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a skin infection or cold sores, take blood thinners, or have reacted to an injection before.

What happens at a skin consultation

The dermatologist asks about your symptoms, how long you have had them, what you have already tried, your medicines and any allergies, and then examines your skin. Some problems need a test, such as a blood test. Blood samples can be given at our pathology lab at the clinic.

Bring the creams and medicines you have used, including any bought from a chemist, and your old prescriptions. If you can, do not put make-up or cream on the affected skin on the day of your visit.

Avoid mixed creams that contain a steroid unless a doctor has prescribed them. Used on a fungal infection, they can make the rash spread and keep coming back.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist soon if:

  • a mole changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds or itches

  • a sore or patch of skin does not heal

  • acne is leaving scars or dark marks

See a doctor the same day if a rash spreads quickly, blisters or comes with fever. If hives come with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
