Cara is the skin and hair clinic of MCR Super Speciality Polyclinic & Pathology, at 11A Sourin Roy Road, near Behala Tram Depot, Kolkata. Our dermatologists see men, women and children with hair fall, thinning hair, dandruff and other scalp problems, and look for the cause before suggesting treatment.

Hair problems we see

  • Hair fall and thinning hair, including hair fall a few months after dengue, typhoid, COVID-19, surgery or childbirth

  • Patterned hair loss in men and women

  • Patchy hair loss (alopecia areata)

  • Dandruff, itching and flaking of the scalp

  • Scalp infections, including fungal infection of the scalp in children

  • Hair loss linked to thyroid problems, low iron, PCOS or medicines

  • Breaking or damaged hair from harsh treatments, colouring or tight hairstyles

What happens at a hair consultation

The dermatologist asks when the hair fall started, about recent illness, diet, stress, periods and medicines, and about hair loss in the family, and then examines your scalp and hair. You may be advised blood tests, for example for thyroid, haemoglobin, iron or vitamin levels. Samples can be given at our pathology lab at the clinic, so you do not need to go elsewhere.

Bring any recent blood reports and a list of the medicines, supplements and hair products you use.

Hair treatments at Cara

Treatment depends on the cause. It may include medicines applied to the scalp or taken by mouth, treatment of an underlying problem such as low iron or a thyroid disorder, and scalp care advice. Cara also offers these treatments at the clinic, and your dermatologist will tell you whether any of them suit you:

  • PRP and GFC for hair: PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and GFC (growth factor concentrate) are prepared from a small amount of your own blood and injected into thinning areas of the scalp. Several sessions are usually needed.

  • Hair transplant: healthy hair follicles are moved from the back of the scalp to thinning areas. Read about hair transplant in Kolkata at Cara.

  • Laser hair removal: for unwanted hair on the face or body. See our skin clinic in Behala page.

Most hair treatments take three to six months to show results, and results vary from person to person.

Be careful with oils, shampoos or regrowth products that promise quick results. Ask a dermatologist before you spend money on them.

When to see a dermatologist soon

  • hair is falling out in patches or clumps

  • the scalp is red, painful or scaly, or has sores

  • hair fall comes with weight changes, tiredness, irregular periods or extra facial hair

  • a child has patchy hair loss or a scaly scalp

  • hair fall has lasted more than three months
